Muthill To Crieff Cyclepath

Project update July 2026 - The Scottish Government has undertaken a reorganisation of active travel funding. This means that Perth and Kinross Council are now responsible for applying for the necessary funding to complete phase two of the path - providing a safe and accessible route to and from Crieff for all to enjoy. We are currently working with the Active Travel team in PKC to explore all routes available to us to make this a reality. The council are currently reviewing the project and will update us on their findings. MVT will continue to engage with our local councillors, who are all very supportive of the project, and the wider community in Crieff.

Phase 2

Findal Cottages to Crieff Community Campus

Phase 2 has been in development for some time. This has been a challenging design process due to factors including:

Designing the bridge to PKC requirements to allow Council to take ownership of the structure when completed.
Taking account of the changing river flows, including due to climate change.
Minimising potential disturbance of the historic refuse tip.
Negotiating with several landowners on the north bank.
Avoiding affecting archaeological remains south of Broich Road.

We are very grateful to Sustrans for funding this stage of the project this far and hope they will be able to continue to support us as we enter the final stages of design and seek full planning permission.

The Trust hopes to hear the outcome of the latest funding application to Sustrans in Sept 2024. If successful, work will then commence on the submission of a full planning application.

MVT will then seek funding for construction.

Raising funds for the project

Since 2014, MVT has organised an annual sportive event with all funds raised supporting Phase Two of the project and the maintenance of the current path. Find out more about this friendly and popular event which sees cyclists returning year after year.

Muthill- Crieff Cyclepath

Phase 1

Phase 1 starts from the Strageath Road approximately half a mile outside of Muthill, the entrance is adjacent to the water treatment works.

This section of the path is tarmac and is 1 mile long. It is fully fenced along the route.

It follows the field boundaries and ends near Templemill.

The roads around the path are all 'Green Routes' with lowered speed limits for a walking and cycling friendly route.

Funders for Phase 1 of the project include Sustrans, SNH (now NatureScot), The Gannochy Trust, the Big Lottery and Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust.

Partners include Drummond Estate and Perth & Kinross Council.

Muthill- Crieff Cyclepath Phase 1

Under Construction 2016

The first phase of the path was underway in early 2016, constructed by Crieff firm, Dewars.

The community watched on as the sections of the path were completed and soon it was ready for use!

The Opening Event

Phase 1 of the path was officially opened on 22 April 2016. The ribbon was cut by pupils from Muthill Primary School and attendees included staff from Sustrans, local elected members, MVT Board and the Muthill community.

Using the Path- Cyclists

The path is suitable for road and mountain bikes.

There are some steeper sections so watch younger children on bikes and it can be a tough climb up from the bridge with a tag-along!

Take care in wet and wintry weather as the path (like surrounding roads) is not gritted and may be slippery with leaves etc.

Please ensure you close the gates after you go through.

Using the Path- Walkers and Dogs

The path is wonderful for walking with excellent views of the Strathearn countryside. It forms a lovely 3.5 mile circuit with the adjacent, quiet country roads.

Dogs are welcome but please always pick up after your dog. There is a bin at the sewage works end of the path for dog waste and other litter.

Also, please keep dogs under close control, especially during lambing times as there are sheep in adjacent fields.

Close all gates as you go through.

Birds & Bikes Mosaic Project

With Katy Galbraith and Muthill PS

With funding from Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust, MVT arranegd for local mosaic artist, Katy Galbraith, to work with pupils from Muthill Primary School to create mosaics for users of the path to enjoy. The pupils chose 6 birds and helped create these beautiful mosaics.

Wild flowers were also planted along part of the route with an Action Earth grant to encourage biodiversity. The local Muthill Scout Group planted these seeds along with a number of new deciduous trees.
